GRANTHAM FAMILY

The origin of the surname Grantham is uncertain, although it is said to probably be Old English, meaning grand. The surname had its beginning with the ancient Anglo-Saxon tribes of Britain - Granta+ham meaning Granta's Village appeared as early as 1086 in the Domesday Book. Grantham is a town located in the County of Lincolnshire. The first documented Grantham families can be found there where they were said to have held a family seat from very ancient times - some researchers say well before the Norman Conquest.
