    Notes
    • Charles' parents were Austin Coffee (1840-1879) and Laura Ambrose (1846-1910). Several of the public trees on ancestry.com indicate that Charles' father was "bushwacked" and murdered while delivering a payroll for tanners. After his father was killed, Charles' mother, Laura, put her first six children in orphanages in Knoxville, Tennessee. Charles and brother Claude ended up in the same home. His sisters were adopted to several families in Chattanooga. Austin Coffee married three times. He abandoned his second wife and children after the Civil War (see court notes below). It appears that Laura and Austin had several children before they made their marriage official in Tennessee.
      From Grainger County, Tennessee: 1873
Elizabeth Dalton Coffey vs. Austin Coffey File 49
M.B. Dalton was summoned as witness (must be Meredith Booker Dalton- her father?). Very hard to read from the court records. Elizabeth filed against Austin whose whereabouts were unknown. She and defendant were married several years before the war in Grainger County and she has resided in Grainger County ever since. She says around about the ? day of 1861 he enlisted in the rebel army and left his home and never returned back until after the war and temporarily stayed a few days and then willfully deserted her bed and board and left her no means of support for her and her children without reasonable cause or provocation. He remained away more than two years and then he returned to the neighbors home with a woman and four children whom he married as his wife and also the said children to be his born in lawful marriage in Virginia near Winchester. Stayed a short time in the county and never came to see Elizabeth or made any excuse for his conduct. She asks that marriage be dissolved and she have all the rights of a single person and her maiden name be restored.
She swore a poverty oath that she could not pay expenses of divorce and was granted divorce. And that, her two children, Huldy Coffey and Ida Coffey, is awarded to their mother, Elizabeth Dalton to properly raise, educate and bring them up. It was ordered that the defendant pay all the cost of the court.
