Notes from Mary Lou Laird: According to Mary Lorene Ayers Daniel (daughter of Clarence Cleveland Ayers), during the Great Depression era, Walter and twin brother Wallace would dress up in old clothes, paint their faces black and sing and dance in shows around Austin.

Note from Caitlyn Ayers Curbow (Granddaughter of Martin Hayes Ayers): My grandpa (my dad's dad) said they did "black-face" in Zilker Park. He said he remembered watching them when he was about ten years old.
