Translated - In the Church of San Juan on the 27th day of August 1879, I baptized Maximiano, 6 days old, natural son of Agustina de Herrera. (All but one of her children's christening records showed Agustina de Herrera as the only parent.) (San Jan de los Caballeros; NM Baptisms, digital images from familysearch.org; Index Pro. Census 2 Jun 1880  Rio Arriba County, New Mexico Find all individuals with events at this location
Indexed as Marianiano Montoya, age 8 born abt 1872 in New Mexico Territory; White male.
    Notes from Carma Gallegos Owen:
During the 1880 census, Max was listed with his father Ilario (Hilario) Montoya and Ilario's wife Josefa Montoya. The family was found in Bosque, Precinct of Huigue, Rio Arriba County, New Mexico (LDS Film 1254803; 155B). The census is dated June 2, 1880. Maximiano Montoya was age 8. Also included were his brother and sisters: Jose (16); Marina (10); Rebecca (6); Albina (4); Anastasia (2); and Abelina (2 mos.). Since they were noted as Hilario Montoya's children in the 1880 census, it has been assumed he was the father of all the children. Their surname at the time of their christening was Herrera. Only Abelina christend April 2, 1880 gave both Hilario Montoya and Agustina de Herrera as parents. As far as I can tell, Hilario and Agustina were not married but did live adjacently to one another. When Maximiano married in 1896, his last name was Herrera and only his mother, Agustina Herrera, was in the record. When Max's first child, Ramoncita Montoya was born on Feb. 27, 1987, their last name was recorded as Montoya. All of Max's children had the last name Montoya.

    Notes
    • From Carma Gallegos Owens - October 2007 - "In 1980, I traveled with my parents to New Mexico. We saw the home of Max and Juanita and it was made of adobe and was beginning to show its age. It had been vacant for many years and the center beams were falling. As my dad remembered the fun times at his grandparents, he told of wonderful meals, loving hugs and well wishes, of chile ristras and corn hanging from the porch, and of the happier times of youth. Dad told me several times that he truly felt loved by his Grandpa Max and Grandma Juanita and that he knew their home was a safe place to go."
