Annias "Nice" Martin Born 28 Dec. 1856 in Central Tennessee, Rutherford County, near Murfreesboro. He was the oldest child of Mordecai Thackerson Martin [the 1st son of Daniel & Mockingbird Martin (she was Cherokee Indian)] and Nancy Ann "Anna" Farley. A brother, Jeremiah was born in 1859 and the family moved to Arkansas at the beginning of the Civil War, probably near the town of Conway and 3 more children were born John in 1862, Catherine in 1864 and Ruth in 1871. On 7 May 1876, Annias married Rebecca Ann Presley, [a young widow with a daughter, Mary Ellen Lackey]. Annias was 19 and Rebecca was 23. They lived in Conway, Arkansas and had one son, Arthur Powers Martin, born 18 Jan 1878. Rebecca died in 1879. Annias with his 16-month-old son and 6 year old stepdaughter, moved from Conway to Bee Branch, Arkansas, to live with his parents. (Actually with his mother, Nancy Ann. She and Mordecai had separated - Mordecai had built himself a separate house nearby on the same land and lived in it). On 4 Sep 1879, Annias married Sirilda Evans they had two daughters (names unknown). Family stories sat that Sirilda was a "dance hall girl" and Annias' mother, Nancy Ann ran her off. They separated (divorced) and Sirilda remarried to a doctor in Arkansas. Shortly after, Sirilda and both daughters died from small pox. In 1884, at age 27, twice married, once widowed and once divorced, Annias left Arkansas and went to Texas. His son and stepdaughter remained in Arkansas, with his mother and brother, Jeremiah. He found work driving cattle for the King Ranch and at the completion on a drive near Dallas, he met the E.T. Evans family. On 4 Oct 1885, he married Cordelia Savannah Evans in Pilot Point, Texas. He was 30 and she was 15 (per some records and family history, she was only 13. They lived in Denton County, Texas and had one son, James Thomas Allen Martin (11 Nov 1887). The next year, they returned to Arkansas and there, had two more children, a daughter, Bertie Tiny May (29 Apr 1890) and a son, William Mordecai Thackerson (15 Aug 1892). They returned to Denton County, Texas in 1894 and had three more children, a son, Ant Bradley (8 Feb 1895) and two daughters, Minnie Bessie (20 Jun 1898) and Essie Mae (10 Nov 1901). In February 1907, Annias and family moved to New Mexico Territory, to homestead on 160 acres near present day, San Jon. There was no direct train service and the family took the train from Dallas through Amarillo, Dalhart to Tucumcari. From Tucumcari, they rode in a wagon to the homestead, arriving February 15th. His brother, Jeremiah was already there on his own homestead and had built a house. Right after their arrival, there was a severe blizzard in the spring of 1907, followed by an unusual drought, forcing them to move to the Texas Panhandle where they lived on the Gene Sanford Ranch to the SE of Canyon, Texas. It was while they were there, that here Annias obtained trapping rights in Palo Duro Canyon. In 1909 they returned to their homestead in New Mexico where Annias and several of his sons got work on the construction of the Rock Island Railroad being built through San Jon connecting Tucumcari with Amarillo, Texas. The family was the first ones to live in the San Jon section house. Regular train service was established between Tucumcari and Memphis, Tennessee and was called the "T & M" Line. When the first passenger train arrived in San Jon in late 1911, the local citizens lovingly called it the "Try and Make It". In 1910, they sold the homestead and leased the nearby Arthur Hayworth place, living there until 1918. Annias raised some cattle, but mostly farmed - broomcorn and melons being the primary crops. In the early 1920's, Annias moved to Amarillo, Texas where he and his sons worked at various jobs, including the paving of streets with bricks, some of which are still in use today. Each of his sons became plumbers in Amarillo, and in the late 1920's; Annias and Cordelia returned to New Mexico and lived with his brother, Jerimiah. In the late 1930's, while crossing US 66 to go get a haircut in San Jon, Annias fell on the ice and broke his hip. He and Cordelia moved to Tucumcari, where they lived until Annias' death 14 Jan 1946. He was buried in the San Jon cemetery next to his father (Mordecai Thackerson) and brother (Jeremiah). One note of personal interest is that when Annias and family returned to New Mexico from Canyon, Texas in 1909, they went in 2 covered wagons. Somewhere about the state line, their youngest child, my mother, was bounced out of the back wagon, and they didn't realize that she was gone until they were several miles down the road. They turned back and found her bruised, dusty and crying, but otherwise unhurt. I sure am glad they went back and found her. (by Matt Turner, Essie Mae Martin Turner's boy).
