    Notes
    • As told by niece Nyna Faye Slape - August - 2008 (The text marked with an asterisk is from Gay Edwards Henderson - granddaughter of David Charles Curbow):

      David was married and divorced to a woman named Hope. They had one son whose name was also David. They were divorced right after he came back from WWII, like in the late 1940's. I only remember seeing Hope and the baby one time. When they divorced she moved to - I think Oklahoma and he didn't have any contact with either of them as far as I know. When David came back from WWII he was pretty messed up. He had been shot in the face and the stomach. Lost part of his nose and lip, always wore a patch or bandage over the area, always lived with Grandma and Grandpa, didn't work regularly, and was an alcoholic. {*His military discharge records indicate that he was not injured.} When Grandpa died (Edwin Curbow), Grandma (Bettie Howard Curbow) came to stay with us. You have to understand it wasn't a long way from our house to theirs (their house was on the farm property about 100 yards from our back door) until after the funeral and left David in their house...guess during the week she was at our house he managed to get someone to go buy booze for him..and when the funeral people went to pick him up to go to Grandpa's funeral they found him dead.. so three days later we had a 2nd funeral. {*This cannot be accurate - as David Charles Curbow died about six weeks after his father - according to the death certificates.}

      As told by Gay Edwards Henderson - January - 2010: I believe that "Hope" is the one we tracked down in Altus in the middle 80's. It was his second wife. They had also had a son that they named David Charles Curbow Jr., then they divorced as well and she remarried. Her son (my Dad's half brother) was living in Bothell, Washington. He called my Dad that night and they talked a few times, sent Christmas cards for a while, but haven't heard from him in a while. He had a heart attack in the 90's. I can't remember the second wife's name, but the timing would be right for it to be her. She told us he went off to serve in the war and ended up in Norway. Did you know this? I wonder what his job was over there? She told us that she'd heard he hooked up with a woman in Norway and she ended up pregnant and had a little girl. When it came time to come home she stayed behind with the baby though, but that part is not confirmed. My Dad is an honorable man and his step dad and his half brother from his Mom's second marriage had a temper, something that my Dad did not. He always assumed he was more like his real Dad, more even tempered. Would David have been that way, I wonder? Also my Dad was very musical, had an analytical mind, and a love of family. His step dad and brother were not turned that way. He also assumed that had to have come from his real father. I hate that he had such a hard time coming back from the war. Ive heard lots of stories like that one, so sad. The last thing...his second wife told us that he carried a baby picture of my Dad in his wallet possibly till the day he died. He would take it out and cry.
