  • Name James Atwood  [1, 2, 3
    Born
    • Many of the trees on ancestry.com indicate that James Atwood was born in 1769 in Virginia. Neither this date or this location has been sourced by me. None of the census records - nor the Will give any indication as to what year he was born in. And again, many of the trees on ancestry.com indicate that he is the son of James Atwood and Mary Turner. I have been unable to get a response from any of the tree owners as to where they received this information or what their sources are.

    • PLEASE NOTE: Since James Atwood is our brick wall ancestor and much of who James Atwood was - who his parents were - who his wife (or wives) were is still a mystery, please be aware that this is what I think at the present time. Research on James Atwood is ongoing and incomplete. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND COME TO YOUR OWN CONCLUSION.

    Family Mary "Polly" Unknown
Married 1791  Find all individuals with events at this location
    • Date of marriage is an ESTIMATE based on the birth year of the first child; Probably married in North Carolina - but not proven.

Based on marriage information extracted from various family tree data submitted to Ancestry and The Generations Network - it should be noted that many of the trees on ancestry.com list a marriage date of 20 July 1809 (James Atwood x Polly Pace) out of Woodford County, Kentucky. If this is in fact our James Atwood - then Polly Pace is clearly not the mother of the three known children as they were all born prior to 1809.

The name of James' wife - Mary (Polly) comes from his will. I do not know her maiden name or who her parents were. I found a family in Laurens County as follows:
Thomas Parker and wife Frankey. They had the following children: Carter, 1803; John, 1805; Sarah; 1808; Polly (who married a James Atwood); Robert; Abraham, 1810; and William. Could this be our Mary (Polly) Atwood? I note that she did name one of her sons William (after her brother?) and one of her sons Thomas (after her father?)
