    • Excerpt from: "I Remember Callahan - History of Callahan County" - Sponsored by the Callahan County Historical Commission:
"Alvin Frankllin Grantham was born in 1904 in Taylor County, Texas. He was raised near Oplin, where he attended school through the tenth grade. He married Ruby Frances Scott, who was born in 1908 in Denton Valley, Callahan County, Texas. Ruby attended Denton Valley school and Dudley school. She graduated from Clyde High School in 1927, where she played on the girls' basketball team. Alvin and Ruby were married in 1927 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ira Grantham in Lawn, Texas. Reverend Parsons performed the ceremony with Myrtle and Irene Williams in attendance. They farmed the Sam Windham place across the road from the G. W. Grantham place near Oplin. Alvin also worked on an oil rig for the Branch brothers. In 1928 while farming the Joe Williams place in Denton Valley, their son, Burma Joe, was born. After his birth they moved to Iraan, Texas. Alvin worked for Texaco, building a pump station. They lived in a tent while they were there. When that construction was completed they moved to California and Alvin went to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad. After being there only a few months, he was laid off due to the Depression. The Railroad gave them passes back to Texas. They moved to Mills Benett in south Texas where Alvin worked in the oil fields. Because of the housing shortage, they again lived in a tent for seventeen months. Once again, the Depression caused Alvin to be laid off. They returned to Callahan County in 1938. Alvin worked in Oplin running a service station for Lucien Pierce and doing mechanic work for himself. They built a small house on his parents' farm. Their son, Joe, attended school in Oplin. Mills Bennet Oil Company called Alvin to come back to work in 1940. They moved back to Mills Bennett, where Ruby ran a boarding house. In 1945 Alvin went to work for Mobil Oil and moved his family to Freer, Texas. Joe graduated from Freer High School in 1940. Mobile then transferred them to Premont, Texas, where Ruby took a nursing course to become a practical nurse (LVN). She worked for Dr. Buck in Premont. She is a past Worthy Matron, Order of Eastern Star of Falfurrias Chapter 146 and Freer Chapter 406. In 1960 Mobile transferred them back to Freer, where Alvin worked as a lease operator. He retired from Mobil in 1966. They returned to Oplin in 1971, bought a home, and remained there until Alvin's death in April of 1979. Alvin helped supervise the restoration of the Oplin Community Center, and was the first President of the Center. A plaque, dedicated to him hangs in the Community Center. After Alvin's death, Ruby sold their home and moved to Clyde. Alvin and Ruby belonged to the Methodist Church. Alvin was a Mason and Ruby is a member of Eastern Star.
