    Notes
    • I have these notes in my possession concerning William Riley Zimmerle; however, I do not have a source. If this is your written work, please contact me so I can give you credit for them:
      William Riley Zimmerlee left Tennessee about 1880 and settled in the county outside the town of Georgetown, Texas, north of Austin. There he met and married Sarah Agnes Patterson. In 1897 he came to Lawn, Texas, present (1990) population 358. Lawn is 24 miles south of Abilene. He put in a blacksmith shop and when that prospered he bought 397.5 acres at $4.00 per acre. Initially he only farmed 17 of the acres. Then he brought his wife and young son out from the Georgetown area to Lawn. Riley & Agnes had 4 children, 3 boys and a girl: Oscar born 14 Oct 1893;
      M. Henry born 2 Aug 1898; Alton born 1 Dec 1901; and Georgia born 12 May 1905.
      Riley had a disagreement with the neighbor on the south side of his property. The local judge decreed that Riley and the neighbor each build a fence 4 feet back on their property, forming an 8 foot lane called a "contrary lane."
      When he got old, Riley divided and sold the land to his 3 sons, 132.5 acres to each. Oscar got the plot near the road, containing the old farm house. Alton got the middle piece and Henry got the most western plot furthest from the road.
      Riley died in 1945, Agnes in 1954. They are buried in Dewey Cemetery, just across the side road from their property, 3 miles southwest of Lawn. We had always heard Riley's wife referred to as "Agnes." Her tombstone says Sarah A.
      All 3 farms are as divided by Riley. The one now owned by Skeezix and Alma (Atwood) and the one owned by Henry's heirs are rented for grain. The one owned by Alton's heirs is not being maintained. The radio tower shown in my picture of Dewey Cemtery is on Alton's farm. Skeezix and Alma commented that there used to be houses up and down the side road which ran past the three farms. Now, with modern farming equipment, the hosues and the people are gone. There was a one room school house on the corner beside the farm, where all the children went to school. The school also doubled as a church. Dewey Cemtery was located behind the school/church. The building is now gone.
