    • Memories - by her son Alvis Blankenship
Memories of Viola Beatrice Admas as told by her son Alvis Blankenship February, 2009:
Bea came with her family to Texas from Alabama by train in 1920. She was 10 years old. Her father had all the lumber to build their new house in Texas shipped by train with them. They stopped in Ovala and that is where Mr. Adams built their house and where Bea grew up from that time on. They stayed with friends until the house was built, I do not know whether they even knew the people until the arrived. The entire family came to Texas - except James Monroe "Jim" Adams. He stayed in Alabama. Ovala, Taylor County, Texas was a bustling town then. They even had a dress shop, and Bea loved clothes. One day when she was sixteen years old, out shopping, she spotted a dress she wanted in the Ovala dress shop that cost $25. But a lady had already told the store owner that she wanted to buy it. The store owner explained to Bea the situation, Bea was disappointed but the store owner being very astute, told her if she found another dress she liked she could have it for $17. She found one and she was happy, the other lady was happy and the store owner made two sales and was happy. But can you imagine - that would be 1926 - and Bea had that much money to spend.

Bea told Beverly (Atwood Blankenship, Alvis' wife) she remembered not long after they had moved to Texas, her mother got a letter, edged in black soot. Before her mother even opened it, she knew that it was a letter telling of a death in the family, because of the blackened edges. She said that's how they sent those letters back then. And it was indeed a letter telling of a death. Fannie's mother had burned to death. She was living with Jim, her son and she had backed up to the fireplace and her dress caught on fire, burning her to death. Beverly said that Bea told her she would never forget that foreboding letter with the black edges.
