    • Velarde Cemetery - Family states that Juanita is buried next to her husband Max; headstones have not been located for either of them.

This is the section where many Montoyas are buried. The marker says only "M.M." - So we can only presume that this might be the gravesite of Max Montoya.

    Notes
    • Notes from Carma Gallegos Owens - October 2007 - "My mother, Dorothy said that Grandma Juanita was very nice. Mom also said that when my Dad was a young man he would chop wood for his Grandma Juanita. She in turn would make red chile with dried jerky that he loved." Mona Gallegos Case remembers going to Grandma Ramoncita Gallegos' house - Great-grandma Juanita was staying with the Gallegos family. She would let Mona and Maggie comb her long grey hair and let them play "beauty parlor" with rollers and bobby pins. She always stayed in bed but loved to have people visit with her in the room."

When my Aunt Margie (Margie Ann Montoya, granddaughter) was a young girl the family made several trips to New Mexico to visit their grandparents. This was after the death of her mother Pearl Eva Spencer Montoya. One summer in particular the children stayed for an extended period of weeks visiting. At this time Grandfather Montoya was no longer living. She remembers Grandmother Montoya as being a very small and sweet lady. She was already bedridden at this time although Margie did not know why. Margie does remember that Grandmother Montoya was very slow in getting out of the bed and that she groaned when doing so. Margie had the task of helping Grandmother Montoya walk to the outhouse. What Margie remembers most about this is the multitude of very tiny little frogs that would jump at her feet as she walked with Grandmother Montoya. Margie described the property that Grandfather and Grandmother Montoya owned. The front adobe house was occupied by their son (Margie's uncle) Joselario Montoya and his wife Caroline. To the right of that adobe home stood a large outdoor oven where the cooking was done. Between the first house and the stove was a courtyard of sorts. Behind the courtyard stood the larger adobe house occupied by the grandparents. It was longer than wide. On the far right side of the house was the storage area where food stuffs were stored....and it was cooler than the rest of the rooms. Then there were a series of rooms one after the other and each had a door leading to the outside. The bedrooms contained two beds each and above each bed was a cross along with some tribute to the Saints. I'm not Catholic so I don't know what that could be. Margie said that Grandmother Montoya was a very devout Catholic - carried her rosary beads with her everywhere - and recited the rosary 3 times per day. The entire compound was surrounded by an adobe fence. Beyond the fence stood the apple orchards. Grandfather Montoya had a "garden patch" where he raised produce for sale. Behind the adobe house was the small village and the church. The area was not large enough to have it's own Catholic priest...so the priest would make sporadic visits. He announced his arrival in the village by ringing a handheld bell as he walked toward the church. Everyone - immediately stopped what they were doing - covered their heads - with anything - even with just a handkerchief - and went immediately to the church for mass. Margie remembers fondly that there were horses on the property that they road bare-back that summer. Margie believes that after Grandfather Montoya died - his wife - Juanita took turns living with her daughters Maria Ramoncita (Aunt Ramona) and Maria Francisca (Aunt Francis).

The only thing my father ever shared about his grandmother Juanita .... was the wonderful homemade tortillas that Grandmother Montoya made !
