    • Oliver's Texas death certificate states that he was born 18 Oct 1840 in Georgia. This date is believed to be incorrect. The early census records indicate that he was born later - sometime around 1845 - and this is the date I am using for Oliver in this research. Oliver was the oldest son of Tilman Curbow and Elizabeth Box. During that time period, the Curbow family seemingly had a large presence in Gwinnett, Jackson, Paulding and Hall Counties - all located in north Georgia. None of my research has yielded a clue as to exactly where in Georgia Oliver Perry Curbow was born. It should be noted that in every census year where Oliver Perry was enumerated - he supplied a different birth year ranging from as early as 1837 to as late as 1847 as follows:

    By 1850 Oliver and his family are living in Mississippi where they appear in District 7 of Itawamba County, Mississippi. Oliver is indexed as being 5 years old - that he was born about 1845* - and that he was born in Alabama. This is the only census record that would indicate Alabama as his birth place. Misindexed as Oliver "Kurgan"; Age 5, born 1845 in Alabama; living with parents Tilman and Elizabeth and older sister Lucinda and younger sister Elizabeth (Jennie).

    The census record states that Oliver Perry is 13 years old - having been born in Georgia in 1847. (As noted above, this date is in serious conflict with his Texas death certificate which lists his birth year as 1840. If we use the 1840 birth date, Oliver would have been almost 20 years old - and again I think 1845 is the correct year of his birth.) Indexed as Oliver P. Curbow, age 13, living with parents Tilman and Elizabeth Curbow, sibilings Lucinda, Sarah J. ("Jennie"), William D., Martha Isabell and Henry Harrison.

    The Confederate Indigent Families Lists of Texas 1863-1865 (as transcribed by Linda Mearse) is a list of indigent families of soldiers in Bowie County, Texas between the years of 1863-1865.
    On the list appear:
    Mrs. Tillman Curben/Curbon - Bowie County, Texas - with 7 children
    (Wife of Tillman Curbow - Mary Elizabeth Box Curbow - with Oliver*, Lucy, Jennie, Hattie, William, Isabell, and Henry).
    *I am inclined to believe that Oliver Perry Curbow was not a civil war soldier.
    AND
    Mrs. Wyse Curben/Curbon - Bowie County, Texas - with 8 children
    (Wife of Wiseman Curbow - Emeline Parker - with Tillman David, Sarah, William, Rebecca, James, John - present in the home in the 1860 census were also two girls Rhoda McCarty and Angeline McCarty - which would bring the total children to 8 as stated. These two girls are thought to be the daughters of Emeline Parker from a previous marriage.)
    This further confirms that Tillman Curbow was in Bowie County with Wiseman Curbow between the 1860 census and the 1870 census....and further confirms in my mind that Tillman and Wiseman were likely brothers.

Oliver states that he is a farmer and that he was born in Georgia. His wife, Harriet E. is 25 years old. The children living in the home are: M.E., age 8; W.D. (William David), age 7; C.D.     Living in J.P. #2, Denton County, Texas. Oliver states that he is 60 years old - that his birth date is July of 1837 - which again conflicts with his death certificate. Oliver states that he is able to read and write - and that he is a farmer - and that he is renting his farm. Oliver is living with his wife Harriet. She states that she is 45 years old and says she was born in September of 1854. Harriet states that she has given birth 7 times - and that 5 children are living as of 1900. (I have only been able to account for six children.) She states that she was born in Texas. The children living with Oliver and Harriet are as follows: William - age 27 - born June 1872 - he states that he has been married for less than a year. William's wife lives with the family. She is 17 years old and was born in Arkansas in May of 1883. Her name is indexed as Auzona Curbow....but her correct name is Arizona Evans Curbow. Also living with the family is Charles - age 25 - born April 1875 - single; Edward (Edwin Perry) - age 15 - born July 1886 - single; May (Taudia Mae)- age 7 - born February 1893. All the boys list their occupations as farm laborers - state they are able to read and write - all the children were born in Texas.Charles, 25; Edwin 15; Taudia May 7.

    Living in J.P. #7, Denton County, Texas. Oliver states that he is 69 years old - putting his birth year at about 1841 - which again conflicts with previous census reports and his Texas death certificate. He states that he was born in Georgia. Oliver states that he is employed as a farmer performing general farm work. Oliver and wife both state that they have been married for 40 years (Feb. 9, 1871). Oliver's wife is indexed as Harnett M - age 36. The actual census record is not very legible, but I believe her age would have been 56 and not 36! Harriet confirms again that she has given birth to 7 children - with 5 of them living as of 1910. She states that she was born in Texas. The census indicates that one daughter is living with Oliver and Harriet. She is indexed as Taudia M. - daughter - age 18.

    • Date and location confirmed by death certificate (#7668); Misindexed in Texas Death Index as Oliver Cubraw; His physician ? Lee, M.D. states that the cause of death was chronic interstitial nephritis - and that he had been ill with this condition for four years. He was specifically treating Oliver from Jan. 20, 1921 until the day of his death. Nephritis is a kidney disorder. Oliver's occupation on the death certificate was listed as "farmer." The names of both of his parents are also confirmed on the death certificate. The informant is J.H. Headrick , Oliver's son-in-law (husband to Taudia Mae Curbow). His address was listed as 713 So. Huston. The City of Denison library advises that there is no obituary listing for Oliver in their obituary index for Denison newspapers.

    • Death Certificates states: Fairview Cemetery a/k/a Maple Grove Cemetery; George Shields, Undertaker; Cemetery has no record of his burial.
      Much confusion exists surrounding the burial location of Oliver Perry Curbow. The burial date of March 30, 1921 is provided by his Texas death certificate. The undertaker was George Shields. However, Oliver's burial location is disputed. The death certificate states that Oliver is buried in Fairview Cemetery. This cemetery is a very large one managed by the City of Denison (who has maintained the burial records from the cemetery's inception to present and is adamant that the index is complete and accurate). The City states that Oliver Perry Curbow is not listed in their index of burials at Fairview Cemetery. It has been suggested to me by several Grayson County historians that Oliver might be buried in Oakwood Cemetery (also in Denison and the older of the two cemeteries). This is plausible because Taudia Mae Curbow Headrick, Oliver's youngest daughter, is buried in Oakwood (according to her death certificate). Unfortunately, Oakwood has no burial index, and I have been unable to confirm either of the burials. Find-a-Grave volunteers have been out to both Fairview and Oakwood Cemetery but have been unable to locate a headstone for Oliver Perry Curbow or his daughter. In one of the volumes of The History of Grayson County, I found a reference to the Shields and Short Funeral Home that was established in 1907 and eventually evolved into the Bratcher Funeral Home. This funeral home is still in existence today in Denison. Unfortunately, the funeral home director, Geraldine Templeton, advises that they have no records pertaining to Oliver Perry Curbow for the year 1921. Admittedly, some of the records apparently were destroyed by fire in years past. I was unable to locate Oliver in the surname index to Grayson County cemeteries. Additionally, I noted that there is also a Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville, Texas (which is not that far) but he does not appear in that index either. Another resource that I checked was The Ancestors and Descendants of Grayson County, but I was not successful in finding the Curbow surname listed there.

Oliver states that he is 60 years old - that his birth date is July of 1837 - which again conflicts with his death certificate. Oliver states that he is able to read and write - and that he is a farmer - and that he is renting his farm. Oliver is living with his wife Harriet. She states that she is 45 years old and says she was born in September of 1854. Harriet states that she has given birth 7 times - and that 5 children are living as of 1900. (I have only been able to account for six children.) She states that she was born in Texas. The children living with Oliver and Harriet are as follows: William - age 27 - born June 1872 - he states that he has been married for less than a year. William's wife lives with the family. She is 17 years old and was born in Arkansas in May of 1883. Her name is indexed as Auzona Curbow....but her correct name is Arizona Evans Curbow. Also living with the family is Charles - age 25 - born April 1875 - single; Edward (Edwin Perry) - age 15 - born July 1886 - single; May (Taudia Mae)- age 7 - born February 1893. Oliver states that he is 69 years old - putting his birth year at about 1841 - which again conflicts with previous census reports and his Texas death certificate. He states that he was born in Georgia. Oliver states that he is employed as a farmer performing general farm work. Oliver and wife both state that they have been married for 40 years (Feb. 9, 1871). Oliver's wife is indexed as Harnett M - age 36. The actual census record is not very legible, but I believe her age would have been 56 and not 36! Harriet confirms again that she has given birth to 7 children - with 5 of them living as of 1910. She states that she was born in Texas.
