  • Name Robert B. Kennedy
Born Abt 1829  Tennessee Find all individuals with events at this location
    • PLEASE NOTE: When I first began researching Robert, I was told that his name was Robert Kenady and that he had immigrated from England. However, recently Mary Curbow obtained the marriage certificate for Robert and wife Jemima Clemintine Rawls from the Mississippi State Archives. This certificate indicates that his name was Robert B. Kennedy and that he married Jemima in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Sanders (or Saunders) Kennedy signed the marriage bond on Robert's behalf. I believe Saunders Kennedy is Robert's father.

First, I was able to locate a Saunders Kennedy (born 1805 and married to Mary Box) living in Potontoc County, Mississippi in the 1850 census. This Saunders had a son named Robert who was born in 1829 in Tennessee. I believe this to be Robert B. Kennedy (or Robert Kenady - as we previously knew him.)

Secondly, Robert's 1850 census record indicates that he was born in 1929 in Tennessee - not England. Saunders Kennedy can be found in Hardeman County, Tennessee during that time period (1830 census). Hardeman County, Tennessee borders Tippah County, Mississippi where the family can be found in 1840, 1841 and 1845 census records. Tippah County, Mississippi is two counties south of Pontotoc County, where Robert and Jemima eventually married (and where the Kennedy family was present in the 1850 census).

Third, I went back and looked at Robert's daughter's census records (Tabitha Clementine Kenady Ham) - and she gave various locations of her father's birth: South Carolina; Georgia; and United States - but never England.

Lastly, the names follow a family pattern - i.e., Mary Box is said to be the daughter of Robert Box - and she named her first born son Robert. Saunders Kennedy is said to be the son of William Kennedy - and he named his second born son William, etc., etc.

At this time I believe that Robert Kennedy (husband of Jemima Clemintine Rawls) is the son of Saunders Kennedy and Mary Box. HOWEVER, I have nothing other than this to tie them all together at this point. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND COME TO YOUR OWN CONCLUSION.

    • This date and location are NOT sourced by me. The oral family history indicates that, Robert was called out onto the porch and shot to death. In another version of this story it is said that, he was accidentally shot and killed in his own backyard. Suffice it to say, we don't know how or why but he apparently lost his life to a gunshot wound. It is presumed that the family was living in Pontotoc County, Mississippi. His wife Jemima is said to have married her second husband, James M. Thomason, sometime around 1860 and she can be found with him in Texas in the 1870 census record.
