  • Name Jose Ylario Montoya
    • I have seen his name spelled Ylario; Hilario; and Illario.
Born Jan 1844  New Mexico Find all individuals with events at this location
    • PLEASE NOTE: Regarding the parentage of Jose Ylario Montoya - Based on various records (census and marriage) and the close proximity of the families: I logically THINK that the parents of Jose Ylario Montoya are Ygnacio and Maria Gallego Montoya - and that based on the census records I THINK the grandfather is Joaquim Montoya. Based on this - these families can be tied to Bartolome de Montoya through his son Diego de Montoya. HOWEVER, I have nothing definitive to tie them all together at this point. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND COME TO YOUR OWN CONCLUSION.

Notes from Heath Barkley: My research indicates we are either Montoya or Tamaris for the following reasons: Jose Joaquin Montoya is linked to the family of Paulin Montoya but records show that when Paulin Montoya got married he got married as Paulin Tamaris (not Montoya), he baptises two of his children as Tamaris and then the rest are baptized Montoya. Research indicates that Paulin was probably adopted by a Montoya family prior to 1750. The Tamaris family was a short lived family name in NM and there is little information on this family. I did read somewhere that the name Tamaris came out of Northern Africa. Jose Joaquin Montoya left very little clues who he was but an early document (before he got married) he is godparents with a Maria Josefa Ortiz (the wife of Paulin Montoya/Tamaris) which may indicate he was with his mother at the baptism (which was the custom of the time). The ONLY way I can prove that we are Montoya's is a DNA test. If the DNA test comes up R1b1 (coming out of Spain) then we are decendants of Conquistador Bartolome Montoya and if it doesnt come up R1b1 then we are decendants of the Tamaris family which I believe will come up J series (Sephardic Jew/Muslim).
    • During this time period New Mexico was still a territory of the United States and not yet a state. His date and location are birth are from census records.

Notes from researcher "truchasnm: La Villita de La Joya (Little Village of the Basin) would be Velarde's original name. David Velarde operated the first post office there and that is how La Joya became Velarde. Another place called La Villita is adjacent to Alcalde, but never would have been referenced as La Joya. Velarde does sit like a basin just prior to entering the Rio Grande Gorge. Great apples from this area!
