William Payton Atwood
Friend of Kit Carson
In a news article entitled "20 Years and Four Generations," which was written about his oldest son, John Ashford Atwood, in August of 1954 it is stated that William Payton Atwood was friends with Kit Carson. How his path may have crossed with our William Payton Atwood is unknown. What is known is that W.P.'s father, Thomas Atwood, was a member of the Second Frontier District. Kit Carson was also a member of this Frontier District. (U.S. Army Col. Kit Carson led California and New Mexico volunteer cavalry against Comanche and Kiowa camps near the abandoned "Adobe Walls" trading post in the Texas Panhandle.)
Kit Carson grew up in Franklin, Missouri, same general area that William Payton Atwood was born. (Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson (December 24, 1809 - May 23, 1868) was an American frontiersman. Carson left home in rural present-day Missouri at the age of 16 and became a trapper in the West. He gained notoriety for his role as John C. Fremont's guide in the American West.
